Understanding VA Care Benefits
Before you search for care, review these core benefit programs. This is general information — an accredited Veterans Service Officer can confirm your exact eligibility at no cost.
- Available in addition to a basic VA pension — eligibility depends on income, net worth, and care needs.
- Can help pay for assisted living, in-home care, or a nursing facility.
- Requires at least 90 days of active service, with at least one day during a wartime period.
- A higher rating can open additional health, housing, and caregiver benefits.
- Compensation is not income-tested — it does not reduce Medicaid eligibility directly, but spend-down planning may be needed.
- An accredited VSO can file the claim at no cost (see the Resources section).
- VA Aid & Attendance helps with assisted living and in-home care; Medicaid covers nursing facility care once income limits are met.
- VA pension income may count toward Medicaid eligibility calculations — coordinate with a case manager before applying.
- A veteran can generally receive a VA pension and Medicaid simultaneously, but benefits planning matters.
- Generally requires an other-than-dishonorable discharge and qualifying active-duty service.
- Priority Groups 1–8 determine copay and access; combat veterans get enhanced eligibility for 5 years post-discharge.
